Medical Ministries International (MMI) is a Christian non-profit corporation with headquarters in Fresno County, California, USA. MMI is a relief organization that provides medical and dental assistance through missionary organizations located in third world countries. This assistance is provided in the form of used or refurbished medical, dental and associated equipment, donated supplies and medicines, and teams of volunteers that provide medical care.
Donations are accepted from most of the major hospitals, private physicians and dental offices in the region. We also receive donations of supplies from families of deceased patients with long term illnesses. The smaller equipment items and donated medical/dental supplies are taken to a warehouse in Clovis, California where they are sorted, cleaned and packed by volunteers for shipment overseas. Larger items such as hospital beds, exam tables, and dental units are taken to another warehouse for cleaning and preparation for shipment.
Beginnings...
As a result of a mission trip to Lithuania, Tom and Nancy Stoeckel who have been active in the medical field for years became acutely aware of the critical need for even the most basic medical supplies in third world countries. This knowledge was coupled with the awareness that in the United States usable medical supplies and equipment are simply discarded. The organization of MMI began from the need overseas and the unused surplus in America as an attempt to bring the two together into a win-win situation. Other needy countries get the items they need and the medical organizations in the US have a way to dispose of these usable items by putting them to good use in other countries. This became part of the impetus for MMI.
In October 1998, MMI was officially incorporated as a non-profit corporation with a mandate to gather, refurbish and ship these supplies to the most underdeveloped areas of the world and to provide teams when possible to help meet the needs overseas.
MMI’s first major project was to build and equip a medical clinic in the region south of Ensenada, Mexico under the direction of Tim and Kathy Johnston, missionaries to the Oaxaca Indians. This clinic is used now used on a regular basis by medical and dental teams from various churches who travel to Ensenada and provide care to the Indians.
